For me, painting is a way to express thoughts, feelings, ideas and emotions.  It can challenge, frustrate and empower all at the same time.  In finding subject matter, it sometimes starts with an idea or an emotion that I feel I can not express with words.  I attempt to have the painting express that idea or emotion via the composition, color or technique.  I look for "internal energy" within the subject and try and find a way to express it visually.
